The Summit Process
1. Preparation Stage: This stage has commenced with three working groups addressing:
- The Role of Primary Care
- Evidence for Best Practice in pain management – both acute and chronic pain
- The Optimum Service Delivery Model for Best Practice
2. Leaders Meeting (17 September 09)
The Leaders Meeting is a preliminary planning meeting where key professional and consumer representatives will review and consolidate recommendations of three working groups to form a strategic framework for the National Pain Strategy.
The Leaders Meeting will involve members of the Steering Committee and Working Groups and others selected to represent key organisations such as the Cancer Australia, Cancer voices, Palliative Care Australia, Arthritis Foundation, Consumer Health Forum, and the bodies responsible for registration and education of relevant professional healthcare groups.
The meeting will agree on a strategic framework for the National Pain Strategy. This will be further developed at stage three, before being presented to a wider stakeholder group at the Summit for consultation and validation.
GSB Consulting and Communications, Norman Swan, has been engaged to facilitate the Leaders Meeting.
3. Development of Draft Strategy; GSB Consulting and Communications will provide an experienced consultant to prepare the draft National Pain Strategy based on recommendation from the Leaders Meeting.
4. National Pain Summit will involve representatives of the first and second stage stakeholder groups. The summit will consider and debate the Draft National Pain Strategy and reach agreement on the final strategy to be taken to Government.
5. Post Summit Action:
- Financial Analysis: The strategy recommendations will be assessed from a financial perspective and a financial model developed to support the proposals, demonstrating how the high cost of managing pain can be reduced over time as a consequence of the implementation of the National Pain Strategy.
- Advocacy: It is envisaged that the National Pain Strategy will be the core advocacy document to be presented to all levels of government to represent the interests of people with pain in Australia. It is anticipated it will be carried forward by ANZCA/ the Faculty of Pain Medicine, the Australian Pain Society and Chronic Pain Australia.
